I In 1998, Dave Pawson founded and coached the Columbia Rockets AAU Basketball
Team in Columbia, Tennessee. He started with two boys’ team’s ages 10U and 13U so his
two sons could play basketball year round. The 10U team qualified for the State AAU
Tournament resulting in a 6th place finish. In 2000, The 15U team finished 13th of 62
teams in the National AAU Invitational Tournament, in Orlando, Florida.
Dave and two of his children, Matthew (13) and Rachel (10), moved back to Michigan, in
February 2001. He wanted to start an AAU basketball program in Adrian. At this time,
there were not any AAU basketball programs in Lenawee County.
Dave wanted to draw players from Adrian and the surrounding cities in Lenawee County.
Matt and Rachel liked the Magic name. Thus, the “Lenawee Magic” was originated.
Learning from experience and knowledge of successful AAU clubs, Dave knew that
clubs need to be affiliated with a children’s program, a YMCA or a church. He approached
the YMCA Youth Coordinator, Jen Raymond. They placed ads in the local newspaper and
ended up with one girls’ 11U team. The first Lenawee Magic team had only nine players
and was coached by Dave.
The Lenawee Magic has grown from one mixed age team in 2001, to six girls’ teams,
ages 12U, 13U, 2 – 14U, 15U and 16U and six boys’ teams, ages 11U, 12U, 14U, 15U, 16U
and 18U in 2006.
The Lenawee Magic will continue to be successful in 2007 with anticipation of 13 teams.
The Lenawee Magic is committed to excellence and will continue to be a positive
organization that provides opportunities to develop each individual athletes’ basketball
fundamentals, character, dedication, sportsmanship, friendships and service to the
community.
